How to Use This Virtual Book Tasting Activity:

Welcome to the Plotline Bistro and Grill! Invite students to explore new and exciting YA books using this immersive and engaging virtual book tasting. Students will browse clickable book covers, sample a variety of genres, reflect on their interests, and complete a book wishlist form to select titles they can’t wait to read. This activity is a great way to lead into your literature circles unit!

This interactive experience transforms book selection into an event rather than a routine classroom task. By framing reading exploration as a Virtual Book Tasting, students approach books with curiosity and excitement, which helps reduce resistance and overwhelm when choosing what to read. The restaurant-style theme adds a playful, low-pressure atmosphere that encourages students to take risks with unfamiliar genres and authors. As students sample books rather than commit immediately, they are more likely to make thoughtful, authentic choices that lead to stronger engagement once reading begins.

This no-prep activity is simple to prepare and assign: simply make copies of the Restaurant Entrance Slide to start the experience, and the Book Wishlist Form to conclude the activity. All of the books are built-in to the slide decks, and student worksheets copy automatically to their Google Drive – no prep required!

Designed with teacher efficiency in mind, this Virtual Book Tasting eliminates the need for printing, book carts, or advance setup. Because all materials are preloaded and organized, teachers can launch the activity quickly and confidently, even on short notice. Automatic copying ensures that each student receives their own materials without confusion or technical hurdles. This streamlined setup makes the Virtual Book Tasting ideal for busy classrooms, substitute plans, or asynchronous learning environments.

Students begin at the Restaurant Entrance, clicking the “Open” sign to start their tasting journey. From the Menu Board, they browse different genres and enter Genre Rooms featuring curated book selections. Each clickable book cover leads to a slide displaying its front and back cover with summary, and reviews.

This structured navigation mimics the experience of moving through a themed space, helping students stay focused while still enjoying autonomy. The genre rooms provide intentional exposure to a wide range of reading options, including popular, diverse, and high-interest titles. By examining covers, summaries, and reviews, students practice previewing strategies that strong readers use when selecting books. The Virtual Book Tasting supports informed decision-making and helps students move beyond judging books solely by their covers.

As they sample at least five books, students complete their Menu Review Booklet – rating each book with stars, jotting down quick impressions, and sharing their thoughts. After sampling, they visit the reflection room to summarize their overall tasting experience using a Reflection Placemat.

These reflection tools encourage students to actively process what they encounter rather than clicking through slides passively. Rating books and recording impressions helps students clarify their preferences and articulate why certain stories appeal to them. The reflection placemat invites students to synthesize their experience, considering patterns in genre interest, themes, or writing styles. Within the Virtual Book Tasting, reflection transforms browsing into meaningful literary engagement.

To conclude the event, students complete a Book Wishlist Google Form, where they simply check the boxes next to the books that captured their interest. This easy-to-use form helps you gather student preferences to inform literature circle groups or independent reading assignments.

The wishlist form serves as both a student voice tool and a practical planning resource. Teachers can easily review responses to form balanced literature circle groups, recommend independent reading books, or guide future purchasing decisions. Because the form is simple and intuitive, students remain focused on their preferences rather than the technology itself. Ending the Virtual Book Tasting with a wishlist reinforces student ownership and signals that their reading choices matter.

Overall, this Virtual Book Tasting creates a welcoming entry point into a reading unit by prioritizing choice, curiosity, and engagement. It helps students feel confident about selecting books while giving teachers valuable insight into student interests. By blending interactive design with thoughtful reflection, this experience sets the stage for meaningful discussions, stronger reading commitment, and a more enthusiastic classroom reading culture.
