Raise a hand if you took the Enneagram personality quiz in the last few years and discovered your type. 🙋♀️
The Enneagram offers something many other frameworks don’t: a lens into the inner world of students and ourselves.
Each of the nine Enneagram types represents a distinct worldview – how a person processes fear, desire, challenge, and relationships.
Imagine recognizing that a student who resists group work (Type 5) isn’t being difficult, but is seeking to conserve energy and maintain inner stability.
Or that the perfection-seeking editor in every peer review session (Type 1) genuinely feels responsible for maintaining high standards because their sense of worth is tied to doing things right.
Even more powerfully, the Enneagram is a mirror for us educators, too.
Are you the loyal, dependable Type 6 who constantly scans for what could go wrong in a lesson plan?
Or the idealistic Type 4 who infuses every unit with meaning and creativity but struggles with consistency?
While the Enneagram shouldn’t be used to label or limit students, it can support social-emotional learning, classroom management, assigning group work, and even lesson design.
It’s also just a really fun way to provide everyone in the classroom with the language to get to know one another better.
