How to use this Plan a Vacation Writing Assignment:

This project is designed to take students on a trip anywhere in the world while evaluating writing using four writing tasks: narrative text, infographic, news report, and information text. Students will research about culture, geography, politics, and current events to demonstrate their understanding of various essential writing skills.

You can begin this project using the Plan a Vacation Project Instructions, which give students an overview of each writing task included with this assignment. These instructions include space to note due dates for both rough work and their final project. These instructions are provided in both editable and ready-to-print format to meet the needs of your classroom.

To scaffold the writing tasks assessed in this assignment, this project outline includes detailed scaffolding worksheets and graphic organizers. These materials include:

  • A news report outline

  • Two narrative framework graphic organizers

  • Dramatic narrative framework

  • SWBST Framework

  • A graphic text planner

  • Graphic organizers to organize research for information texts

To model expectations, a student example has been provided. This student example shares a vacation to Croatia and includes a magazine article, news report, diary entry, and travel itinerary infographic. It also includes formatting guidelines according to MLA 9, including a cover page and a works cited page with references.

A 4-level writing rubric has also been provided for assessment purposes. This rubric is also provided in editable and ready-to-print formats to meet the unique needs of your classroom.
