How to use this Free Verse Writing:

Free verse poetry is a wonderful way to encourage creative expression and relate poetry to popular culture and students’ personal interests. Unlike traditional poetic forms, free verse writing gives students the freedom to experiment with language, rhythm, and structure without adhering to strict rhyme schemes or meter. This flexibility allows students to develop their unique voice and express emotions in a way that feels authentic and personal. In this writing workshop, students will explore modern examples of free verse poetry, analyze how contemporary poets craft meaning, and then select their own style and approach to write a free verse poem using the materials provided in this resource. Whether they choose to craft an erasure poem, illustrate a poem in the style of Instagram poets, or create a collage poem, this workshop will inspire them to think creatively and embrace the artistic possibilities of free verse writing.

Begin with the Free Verse Poetry Slideshow Lesson. This lesson activates background knowledge, recalls essential terminology, and introduces students to the unique characteristics of free verse poetry. Unlike traditional poetry forms, free verse writing breaks conventional rules, allowing poets to play with line breaks, word spacing, and rhythm to enhance the meaning of their work. The interactive presentation explains how free verse poems often rely on strong imagery, figurative language, and natural speech patterns, making them highly accessible and relatable for young writers. The slideshow features examples from modern poets, highlighting how they use free verse writing techniques to craft powerful, evocative poetry. By engaging with this presentation, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the limitless possibilities of free verse poetry and feel inspired to experiment with their own writing.

The slideshow requires access to the internet and specifically explores Instagram poets who have gained popularity for their use of free verse writing. If your district does not allow access to Instagram or if you prefer to avoid social media platforms in the classroom, you can still use the web links included in this resource to explore poets featured on the Poetry Foundation website. These poets provide excellent examples of free verse writing, demonstrating how contemporary poetry can be both minimalist and deeply expressive. By analyzing these poems, students will see how poets use line breaks, white space, and rhythm to create meaning and emotion without relying on strict poetic structures. This comparison between social media poets and traditional free verse poets offers students a broad perspective on how free verse writing continues to evolve in modern literature.

Next, distribute the Free Verse Poetry Informational Handout to reinforce key concepts. This handout serves as a valuable reference tool, covering the stylistic choices that define free verse writing. It explains how poets use language, structure, and rhythm in unconventional ways, helping students understand the purpose and impact of these stylistic decisions. Additionally, the handout includes assignment instructions, guiding students through the process of crafting their own free verse poems. This structured approach ensures that students feel supported in their writing while still having the freedom to explore their creativity. The handout also includes examples of free verse poetry, showcasing different writing styles and techniques that students can use for inspiration. By analyzing these examples, students will gain a strong foundation in free verse writing before embarking on their own poetic journey.

There are three different options for this assignment, allowing students to choose a creative approach that best suits their interests and strengths:

  1. Students can model the process demonstrated in the slideshow lesson and create an erasure poem or “blackout poem.” This technique involves selecting a passage from an existing text and strategically blacking out words to create a new poem. This approach emphasizes the importance of word choice, negative space, and interpretation, making it an exciting way to engage with free verse writing.

  2. They can also write a free verse poem and draw an accompanying illustration in the style of Instagram poets like Rupi Kaur. This option encourages students to think about how poetry and visual elements work together, mirroring the minimalist yet impactful style of many modern free verse poets. By pairing their poem with a simple yet meaningful illustration, students will explore how art and poetry intersect in free verse writing.

  3. They can alternatively create a collage poem using newspaper or magazine pages. This method involves cutting out words and phrases from printed materials and arranging them into a new, original poem. It introduces an experimental, mixed-media approach to free verse writing, helping students think outside the box when composing their poetry. This hands-on method makes poetry more tangible and interactive, allowing students to manipulate language in a way that feels playful and creative.

To support students in their writing, this resource also includes writing templates for each style of free verse poetry. These templates provide guidance and structure, ensuring that students understand how to organize their ideas while still allowing them the flexibility to experiment with their poetic voice. Whether they choose to create a blackout poem, an illustrated poem, or a collage poem, the templates offer clear formatting options that make the writing process approachable and accessible for all learners.

Additionally, this resource includes 30 pages for blackout poems, pulled from age-appropriate literature in the public domain. Students can select one of these pages to use for their blackout poem, eliminating the need to search for their own materials. This curated selection ensures that students have high-quality literary excerpts that work well for the blackout poetry technique, helping them engage with free verse writing in a meaningful way. By providing these resources, students can focus on creativity rather than spending time searching for materials, making the writing process smooth and enjoyable.

To evaluate this assignment, a 4-level rubric has been provided. This rubric is available in both editable and ready-to-print formats, allowing you to modify the success criteria to align with your classroom’s needs and curriculum expectations. The rubric assesses key components of free verse writing, including creativity, structure, thematic depth, and use of poetic devices. By using a clear grading system, students will understand how their work is evaluated, giving them the opportunity to reflect on their strengths and areas for growth. Since free verse writing is inherently subjective and expressive, the rubric allows for flexibility while still maintaining structured evaluation criteria.

By integrating this Free Verse Writing workshop into your curriculum, you provide students with a valuable opportunity to explore poetry in a fresh and engaging way. This assignment encourages self-expression, critical thinking, and creativity, helping students develop a deeper appreciation for modern poetry. Whether they craft an erasure poem, an illustrated free verse poem, or a collage poem, students will gain confidence in their poetic abilities and experience the endless creative possibilities of free verse writing.

My EL students were excited but a bit intimidated being asked to write poetry. The collage and illustrative poems were more accessible to them. The blackout poem was very challenging due to the reading level of the pulled text. I ended up finding easier pulled texts for them, as needed. All in all, they were very engaged and excited to express themselves. Thank you.

I am so glad I found this resource. I was looking for a fun way to wrap up our unit on poetry. Some of my 9th graders have been itching to do creative writing, but others are very apprehensive. I love that this product gives three options. It allows students who are less confident in creative writing to explore poetry and express themselves. The design was also beautiful and the examples were great. Thank you!
