Resources Included with this George Orwell’s 1984 Novel Study:
1984 by George Orwell is a classic dystopian novel recounting one man’s rebellion against an oppressive and restrictive regime. Rich with parallels to historical and modern societies, this story highlights themes surrounding propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, and mass control.
This rigorous and engaging novel study will help students gain deeper access to the theories and concepts of this brilliant novel. This bundle is freshly updated, no-prep, and ready-to-print! Follow the pacing guide included with this unit to guide you through the following resources:
Includes 48 close reading comprehension questions in total! Encourage students to avoid online summaries and read George Orwell’s 1984 with attention to detail using these chapter-by-chapter bell ringer quizzes.
These reading questions are developed to assess a student’s close reading of the text and quiz aspects of the novel’s plot summary. In order to motivate students to read George Orwell’s 1984 with attention to detail, they have taken online summaries into consideration and ask questions that can only be answered by reading the novel.
Help students gain a deeper understanding of George Orwell’s 1984 with these chapter comprehension questions and discussion prompts! Includes digital workbooks for online learning.
Each chapter includes both comprehension questions and discussion prompts. The comprehension questions will evaluate students’ knowledge and understanding of the chapter and explore character development, recurring symbols, and the plot summary. The discussion questions will prompt students to analyze larger themes, symbolism, literary elements and devices, character relationships and more.
Orwell’s use of symbolism draws attention to the dark realities of this dystopian society in a subtle yet meaningful way. Scaffold close reading and inquiry-based literary analysis using the activities in this resource.
The Symbol Tracker Graphic Organizer has students analyze each symbol by considering the text evidence, description, important characteristics, and associated themes of each symbol. Using this information, they are then prompted to write an analysis paragraph about the symbol.
There are two assessments included in this symbolism activity for George Orwell’s 1984:
- The first involves developing and delivering a slideshow presentation about one symbol. This assignment is a great option for students tracking symbols within the novel in groups.
- The second assignment is an essay writing prompt related to symbolism in 1984; this is a great option for students tracking symbols independently.
How does 1984 relate to real life? This activity prompts students to define key concepts in 1984, including “Doublethink,” “The Ministry of Peace,” “The Ministry of Truth,” “the Telescreen,” and “Big Brother.” These concepts have been paired with a variety of articles and external sources to establish modern parallels between Orwellian theory and our current world.
These modern parallels critically examine the oil and gas industry, imperial cults, social media, real-world propaganda, and modern warfare.
Propaganda is a key theme in George Orwell’s 1984 and a valuable lesson to explore with students, especially as it relates to advertising! Teach students to identify common elements of propaganda and apply these concepts to create their own book advertisement for the novel 1984.
In this lesson, students will learn about the common elements of propaganda and the characteristics of persuasive language to create their own book advertisement for George Orwell’s 1984. This activity is a great way to explore the themes, plot, and character profiles of the novel, connecting them to the larger motifs of the story.
Teach students to identify fundamental elements of media literacy and apply these concepts to their own social media analysis.
In this lesson, students will learn about the common elements of media literacy and explore a framework that can be applied to any media source. Students will then practice media literacy by evaluating a social media source of their choice. This activity is a great way to teach students how to navigate online spaces and evaluate the media sources they encounter.
Explore themes of surveillance, control, and rebellion in 1984 using this song analysis lesson and activity! Practice annotating with the worksheets and graphic organizers provided.
With this lesson, you can make connections between your language arts curriculum and your students’ personal interests. Students will explore themes from George Orwell’s 1984 by analyzing song lyrics related to surveillance, control, and rebellion.
Dense with theory, this section of the text can be a challenge for students; however, it serves as the foundation of the novel and is therefore important to read closely.
With the help of these guided reading comprehension questions, students will be prompted to pay close attention to the key areas of this manuscript to gain a deeper understanding of Goldstein’s book.
This resource is divided into three parts:
–Part A includes 13 comprehension questions. These guided reading questions prompt students to think deeply about different aspects of Goldstein’s theory and communicate their knowledge and comprehension in their own words. These questions analyze the following aspects of George Orwell’s 1984:
- Definitions of key terms and phrases including “oligarchical collectivism,” “doublethink,” “War is Peace,” and more
- Characteristics of war over time
- The goals of the Party
- The characteristics of Big Brother
- Class distinctions and relationships between classes
- And more!
– Part B includes a blank interactive map that prompts students to identify the boundaries of Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia.
– Part C has students analyze different literary devices within Goldstein’s book, including:
- Aphorism
- Analogy
- Personification
- Metaphor
- And more!
George Orwell’s essay, “Politics and the English Language,” is an insightful exploration of the signification of language and how it can become construed to serve a political agenda. Orwell aims to encourage his audiences to think deeply about the use of particular diction and figurative language to avoid the collapse of the English language.
This essay is a challenging read for students but serves as a useful lesson for young readers and writers alike. You can encourage your students to read slowly and mindfully; with the use of this guide, they will be guided to conceptualize the political power of language.
Part A of this resource has students examine “Politics and the English Language” from a figurative and rhetorical angle through a series of question prompts.
Part B prompts students to write a comparison between this essay and one of two applicable texts – Orwell’s “Principles of Newspeak” or Harry Truman’s “Statement Announcing the Use of the A-Bomb at Hiroshima.” Links to these supplementary resources have been provided.
Explore characterization in George Orwell’s 1984 using this Diary Entry Activity! This assignment will have students explore the context of 1984 from the perspective of any character of their choice. Includes diary entry templates, reflection questions, and a sharing and discussion guide.
In this activity, students will adopt the perspective of a character of their choice from George Orwell’s 1984. Through role playing and writing diary entries to explore the context of 1984, students will also examine characterization within the novel.
This 1984 escape room game challenges students to solve different puzzles to review their knowledge and understanding of George Orwell’s novel. Use this escape room challenge as a final test review or to consolidate your 1984 novel study!
In order to escape from Room 101, students must complete 6 Interactive Puzzles. This was a fun way to track reading that wasn’t repetitive. Thank you!

I love this resource for 1984! It’s straightforward to use and really pushes students to think critically about what they’re reading. I used it alongside the novel and class discussion, and it helped students break down Orwell’s language while encouraging them to dig into the themes of surveillance, truth, and control. What I appreciate most is its versatility—I could assign it in parts or as a whole, and my students worked diligently and stayed engaged throughout the period. This single resource made a challenging text more approachable while still driving students to analyze Orwell’s deeper message.
Madelyn F. –
This resource covers so many aspects of the novel, is easy to use, and contains engaging activities for students! I will be using this resource again!

This unit has exceeded every expectation I had. It’s incredibly thorough, thoughtfully structured, and truly a dream to teach. The level of organization and depth in the materials made it such a rewarding experience to work through. In fact, there was so much meaningful content that I found myself having to leave a few things out—not because they weren’t valuable, but simply because there wasn’t enough time to fit it all in!

This bundle has a vast array of activities. Student enjoyed the escape room. Had a bit of trouble locating some of the items listed in the pacing guide but pretty well organized overall. I would have liked to be able to edit several of the items to be specific for my student however I understand there was some authorization issues with that. I wish I had realized that prior to purchase but it was listed in the description. My fault for not seeing it. Student enjoyed the escape room. Had a bit of trouble locating some of the items listed in the pacing guide but pretty well organized overall.

It has been a while since I have taught 1984 and this was a great source to get me started. It had more content than I had time for, but I was able to pick and choose the resources that were most beneficial to my students and my goals.

Loved this. It aligned well with my learning goals and was super easy to implement. My students were engaged and the discussion prompts were thoughtful and age appropriate.

I am teaching 1984 for the 3rd year, and this is by far my favorite unit! There is so much, and it has great resources to use as supplementals, rather than to keep giving comprehension questions and move on.

Lots of really great activities to get students analyzing 1984 beyond simple chapter questions!
